Settlers first arrived in Steuben County in 1831 and found rich, fertile lands and beautiful scenery. The county was created in 1837 and took its namesake from Baron Frederick von Steuben, an officer in the Revolutionary War. Tri-State Normal College was established by the citizens of Angola in 1884. After several evolutions it was named Trine University in 2008 after local philanthropists Ralph and Sheri Trine. Pokagon State Park is a major attraction in Steuben County. Unique in its year-round activity, Pokagon was established in 1925 through a contribution of land from the county to the Indiana Department of Conservation (now Department of Natural Resources), and named after the 19th century Potawatomi chief, Leopold Pokagon.

With a 2019 population of 34,459, Steuben County borders DeKalb County to the south, Noble County to the southwest, LaGrange County to the west, Michigan to the north, and Ohio to the east. The City of Angola is the county seat. Steuben County is also home to six other vibrant towns: Ashley, Clear Lake, Fremont, Hamilton, Hudson, and Orland. Ideally located in the tri-state area, a comprehensive logistical network and solid infrastructure provides everything businesses need in the area. The Indiana Toll Road (Interstate 80 and Interstate 90), Interstate 69, and U.S. 20 are valuable transportation assets. The Indiana Northeast Railroad services the rail needs of the county.  The Tri-State Steuben County Airport is the nearest general aviation airport and Fort Wayne International Airport is the nearest international airport. Indiana Metropolitan Area Network (iMAN Fiber Optics) was established by the Steuben County Community Foundation in 1998 to serve the high speed internet needs of area businesses, schools, libraries, hospitals, and government.

• Angola

  The city of Angola is located at the intersection of U.S. 20 and State Road 127 in Northeast Indiana. Angola is the county seat.

• Ashley

  Ashley is a small town with a big outlook. We're located in the northeast corner of Indiana, on the west side of I-69 Exit 140.

• Clear Lake

  Water represents just over 50% of Clear Lake's total area. With just over 300, it's the smallest community in Steuben County.

• Fremont

  Fremont is the second largest community in Steuben County and is located just over one mile south of the Michigan state line.

• Hamilton

  Hamilton Lake covers over 800 acres with a depth of over 90 feet. Downtown is located along the south shore of the Lake.

• Hudson

  Located in rural Northeast Indiana, Hudson, Indiana is dubbed "America's Greatest Little Town."

• Orland

  The Town of Orland resides at the intersection of State Road 120 and State Road 327.
